Armored Warfare Developer Q&A

Hello warriors,

Armored Warfare released its first weekly developer Q&A (player questions from AW forums were answered by developers, mostly the chief developer Richard Taylor). This is however not only a repost - if you want to, you can ask some stuff in the comments and Silentstalker ("Frank Davis" in comments) will be answering if he can.

Question: Can you quickly describe the ramming system? What happens when I ram into an enemy vehicle?
Answer: Each vehicle has a base "ramming damage rating". This rating is primarily determined by the vehicle's mass, tier, and class. Vehicles also have a "ramming defense rating", which is also primarily determined by mass, tier, and class. This helps reduce the damage that vehicle takes from ramming.
When the vehicle impacts another vehicle, we check the relative velocity of the collision. If it exceeds a certain threshold, a damage score is generated based on the ramming damage rating multiplied by a factor of the relative speed of the impact. This damage is then reduced based on a combination of the armor thickness at the point of impact and the ramming defense rating. This happens to both the vehicles in the collision; essentially, they both deal damage to each other based on their (ramming damage * velocity modifier) vs. their opponent's (ramming defense + armor at point of impact).
The reason we use things like "ramming damage ratings" and "ramming defense ratings" rather than just mass and armor is because we have both heavy and light vehicles at almost every tier of play. These ratings help us make sure that ramming damage remains reasonable, so we don't see cases where tapping an equal tier vehicle causes it to explode, or where a heavy vehicle for its tier is immune to ramming.

Question: Is it possible that if a new tank is unveiled in future (for example the Armata, expected to appear during the Victory Day parade in Moscow in May), it will be added into the game?
Answer: Yes, it’s completely possible – we will be adding more and more vehicles to the game, including the newest tanks.

Question: Will the shells in flight be modeled as physical objects – for example, is it possible for two missiles to hit each other?
Answer: All projectiles are modeled as spheres in space which means they do have some dimensions. They are not modeled out to their accurate shape in the air because this would not have any impact on gameplay while costing precious server CPU cycles while calculating their collisions with the world. It is actually possible for two shells to collide and explode, but it is incredibly unlikely that this would ever happen just because of the timing it would take for two shells to occupy the same space in the same instant.

Question: Will it be possible to test premium vehicles before buying them, for example in some sort of training room?
Answer: It will not be possible to test vehicles you do not own at first. However, we are exploring some options that would make it possible to launch into a single player test map on your computer. We do not have an estimate of when this change would be released in an update. It is still something we are in the early stages of evaluating for now.

Question: Will PvE mode be introduced in CBT and will it be possible to use it as alternative means for progression (eg. gain XP via PvE)?
Answer: PvE mode is expected to be released into Closed Beta Testing at some point but will not be part of the initial phase. It is our intention that one can progress through and unlock the majority of the content of the game through only playing PVE. Once we are closer to being able bring PVE into the Closed Beta, we will provide additional information.

Question: Currently, the highest tiered light tank is tier 7. Are there any plans for tier 8 light tanks in the future, such as the CV90120-T?
Answer: There is no reason why we wouldn't have light tanks of all tiers, should suitable candidates present themselves. The only reason we do not already have a Tier 8 Light Tank is because we had to divide up our initial vehicle budget across all 5 classes and try to spread the classes across 8 tiers. As we continue to add more vehicles to Armored Warfare, there will be more class representation across all of the tiers.

Question: Will there be a competitive mode for skilled players and clans?
Answer: Definitely, an „end-game“ mode for organized groups and clans is being prepared and should become available after the game gets released.

Question: Will the vehicles that are amphibious in real life (PT-76, BMP) be able to swim in Armored Warfare as well?
Answer: Currently no maps feature any bodies of water large enough as to actually use such ability, but it’s possible that in the future, this feature will be implemented.

Question: Is there a plan to introduce bots as „replacement players“ in PvP mode?
Answer: No, there are no such plans – we want to use bots only in PvE battles.

Question: Are there any plans to reduce the accuracy RNG factor?
Answer: We are currently testing several variants related to shell distribution in the aim circle. It’s completely possible that the accuracy of the vehicles will be improved in order to produce more accurate and predictable results.

Question: Will the players be allowed to paint whatever they want on their tanks? If not, why?
Answer: While we do want players to customize their vehicles and don’t want to limit them to several pre-set camouflages, there is unfortunately the issue of preventing abuse of such functions. Displaying certain signs and pictures openly (such as nazi symbols) is strictly forbidden in many countries and allowing players to „decorate“ tanks freely could potentially lead to issues in the aforementioned countries.

Question: Will the players start the game with a tier 1 vehicle from every dealer or will some dealers have to be unlocked as the player progresses?
Answer: Our current plan is that Tier 1 vehicles will always be given to players for free no matter what Dealer Tree they fall into. However, not all Dealers will have Tier 1 vehicles. Some of the future Dealers will start at higher tiers than Tier 1.

Question: Are there plans for wheeled artillery as well, such as the Vz.77 DANA or South African G6 howitzer?
Answer: There is nothing preventing us from introducing these vehicles to the game, although our primary concern when it comes to artillery is to first introduce a balanced and entertaining way of playing it. We can consider adding more artillery vehicles to the game only after we are absolutely sure the entire class is playable and balanced.

Question: Is tank information such as firing, HP, penetration and movement calculated on the server or on the client?
Answer: All combat and movement calculations are performed on the side of the server to prevent the creation of hacks and cheats.

Question: I would like to ask developers about implementation of the weather on maps. Can game engine handle map wide fog, hard rain, snow? Will terrain change due to weather effects?
Answer: We definitely want our maps to feel as realistic as possible and that includes realistic weather effects. At the same time, changing the ground properties based on weather conditions could..

  2. @SS : Do the tanks have different accuracy on the move compared to each other ?

    1. Yes, of course. Generally, tanks that are supposed to be moving without much armor have better accuracy on the move than say tank destroyers.

  3. I know this is a stupid question, but I just can't help asking:

Are there any plans in the distant future to implement "vintage" tier 1 vehicles from the beginning of the Cold War? Like Obj.279/IS-7/M103/IS-3. Basicly the last heavy tanks. I know they would be pretty useless but personally I would really like having them for collection and comparing them to modern MBT.

Also, will T-54 be in the game or the first Russian tank is T-62?

    3. Is it possible that if you cannot balance arty properly, you will REMOVE_ARTY_FROM_THE_GAME? ;)

    4. Who knows... first, we will test the current modified model.

      Delete
    5. Right now arty in AW is almost EXACTLY like arty in WOT's. AW has to decide if they leave it so NOOBS that suck at the game have something to play and spend money on, like arty in WOT's, or to nerf the shit out of it so nobody plays it and AW makes no money off of it. I can't wait to see what they decide.

  8. Will hitting an armored, but non-critical, part of a tank still deal full damage (think of the gun shield on a waffle in WoT, for example)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This issue is not completely decided. There were thoughts about making hitting weakspots (hatches etc.) do less damage but you have to consider the fact that MBT class for example is extremely well armored in the frontal sector and it would be quite a buff. Various options will be tested.

      Delete
    2. In other words, it's likely it will be exactly like it is in WOT's.

    1. Who cares. It's not like any arcade game, even with super acurate stats, will be anything like real tank warfare. (eg WOT).

      Delete
    2. Well, stats like speed and such are usually known. The armor is a problem, but in this case we will use estimates from reputable sources and analysts (Jane's for example) - sure, it's just an estimate, but it's as good as any. Plus, there's plenty of info freely accessible on tank expert forums (tank-net).

      Delete
    3. This is an arcade game. Armor in real life is MEANINGLESS to the tanks in the game, completely MEANINGLESS. Modern MBT's have NEVER fought against each other in battle so there is no way to know how they would penetrate or do against each other so it's all complete guesswork. Just like in WOT's AW will decide which tanks are OP and which of the suck, but it will have nothing to do with "real life."

      Delete
    4. As matter of fact not quite so. Standard ammunitions for Modern MBT as you called them are more or less far better known publically, than the high tech features of the tanks. The armour of most MBT have been thoroughly tested with many kinds of ammo, before implemented. So I'm sure there's plenty of people - military and engineers who know exactly what to expect when their MBT is hit by ammo fired by another MBT. Real and bigger mystery is how effective will be in real life all those defensive systems in the modern MBT which are supposed to prevent this from happening in combat.

  16. Just out of curiosity SS, how does camouflage work in AW? Things don't magically disappear and appear out of the blue like they do in WOT right? The one thing about WOT that had me pissed off real bad were vehicles phasing out in the open field.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The system uses spotting checks but I believe there are "checks" that prevent vehicles from disappearing (for example, if a vehicle was once spotted and doesn't stop behind cover or a bush, it won't disappear). In alpha, it worked well enough (there was one or two cases of shooting TD bushes) but this was changed in the newer iteration.

  19. will there be an equivalent to render range from wot in aw in order to encourage faster paced battles? and if this is a thing then will there be a separate range given toi each vehicle class like tds having the longest as an example? (which in my opinion isnt a great idea because that could lead to some whining)

    ReplyDelete
  20. If a vehicle uses a unique ammo type, will AW accurately represent that in the game or will ammo be standardized to 3-4 types like in WOT?

  21. Obsidian has not made any attempts to hide the fact that they are following Wargamings formula for a tank game, but are they attempting to solve the many issues that players are not happy with when it comes to World of Tanks that Wargaming doesn't seem to want to address? Specifically, skill based matchmaking, the way artillery currently works, power creep, "paper" tanks (or worse, completely fictional ones), and the general technical lack of performance of the game itself.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmmm let me see:

      - there is a skill sorting in MM so yes
      - artillery will be changed indeed
      - power creep, kinda hard to address in alpha :)
      - prototypes will likely only be premium tanks, there will not be "paper" tanks at all AFAIK
      - performance: it's CryEngine...

    2. Skill MM, if it's implemented, will be the DEATH of AW before it's even started. Right now, ARTY in AW is almost exactly like WOT's. Obsidian is trying to decide to leave it as is so bad players have something easy to play and spend money on, like WOT's, or nerf the shit out of it, and then nobody plays it and Obsidian makes no money off of it. I can't wait to see what they decide. I am a good player in WOT's so I rarely get killed by arty and I farm way more damage off of arty then they farm off of me, WAY MORE!!!!!!

    3. Mark, you are a troll, or you did not see the AW vehicle class video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRdgyBjpIW0
Arty will be MUCH different than in WoT, it will be more like a support class (as it should be) using special ammo. It looks like Obsidian is on the right way to make arty balanced and fun to play ;)

      Delete
    4. Mark definitely is a troll, just read this page.
Skill MM, if done correctly, will give us competitive matches nearly every time. No more 75% or 25% chance to win, or WORSE.

  22. A ways if implementing the custom camo and graphics, could be to create a sort of "Store" for them, where only pre approved camos and decals are allowed for "Purchase".

They could be completely free, or you could even set up a system in which players can gain in game currency.

    4. Mark West, if WarGaming is so awesome, and if it is so successful, and if it has nothing to fear from Armored Warfare, then why are you fighting so hard to defend it? Seems like if WarGaming was all you make it out to be, they wouldn't need a little nobody like you defending their honor on a forum that is neither hostile towards WarGaming nor attacking it or you. Why all the fuss then? You mad, bro? Or just scared AW might actually spell the end of your little fantasy WG world? ;D

      Delete
    5. I am personally skeptical over the World of Warships but that is just my opinion. The game is however not fundamentally flawed like WoWp was (and I got bashed really hard when I said it by the time WoWp went into beta) and it might be good, we'll just have to see.

As for Wargaming, yes - they obviously made a lot of money. But so did our publisher - so what? That's not really that important. What is important for me is that the developers actually LISTEN - and you don't have to speak Russian to be heard. But that's not all - I think most developers can tell you that listening to ALL the community says is a stupid idea because sometimes the community does not understand the mechanics behind the game and based on their limited understanding they post crap. Obsidian devs do listen but they are also skilled enough to recognize when proposed ideas are stupid.

So yes, I like working on AW.

  26. And now some real Q&A: (for SS)

1 What about shit like warpack? (aimbots)
2 What about bots in general (got 2 nice replays of some last days...)
3 What about xvm like mods (last map locations and such) which in my book was also unfair as long not everyone had it.
(and what about the dick compare shit which follows after "uhh shut up tomato< coming SOON to AW ?...ps. and those "i quit, its just 49,99% win chance" noobs?)
4 What about "helpful skins" showing all freaking modules on ur tank or make them snow white etc...
5 do we have to re-invent the wheel for "AFK" players? Wot took years to implement a real system for that. (i cant image why)

So lets get to some other topic...
    a) What about "Mr. less than 1000 games in Tier8 premium" ruins ur day? I bet TierMM comes for skill MM...
    b) What about the chat systems? Im not in beta so do we get a nice racist (not racial... racist) mixed general you cant leave? Or is it like WT/eve ... more split up by IP (nation) or so? I don't want to see those language arguments starting over again.
If AW's system is as piss poor as in wot... no thanks. EvE Online has best chat system i seen yet in an MMO... (cause its sooo hard to do that shit right!?)
    c) What about hypocrite player name's? In wot its forbidden to name ur self Adolf_88_SS... but totally fine to wear names of russian mass murders (cause u know... reasons)
[also what Rita mentioned: your name includes accidentally SS (Penguinss) and ur forced to change it...?]
    d) What about spam in public chats? Report function and real spam filter (since the one in wot does jack shit) ... love ppl F3 key clanspam or just "alsdkfsdfksfdsf" for hours since mods are just casual online < which also is a plain stoopid solution for the problem (doesnt solve the "cause" < anyone here has a carden? dont you pluck roots??)
    e) What about fail platoons? tier 1 in tier 10? ... i shoot those... no exceptions, no mercy.
    d) If you get muted by a mod (everyone has once a bad day) you also cant even blink ingame and punish my team with it? Cause ppl that say "fuck" are all spamers...
    f) Do you treat the player base like idiots? I have to use 3rd party software or wiki to find shit like gun angles!? Why? More information is good as long its optional! If you treat ur players like idiots - u get idiots! That simple. [more tutorials! with more depth than "wasd" ...] ...some tier10 ppl have no shit idea about spotting system and artis dont know map sight (pressing "shift" is hack).
    e) Will there be polls to vote for shitty maps or tanks? Prokorovka was shittiest campermap ever for years - just watch heatmaps of ppl sitting in 1 corner 12minutes (fun!).
    f) What about shit like: i shoot e75 hatch ...or freaking ELC with 300pen... it BOUNCES....... is there some kind of mechanic to insure, that shit pens when it pens?

    Something general to your Q&A:
Lets use ur RNG statement for example: "its possible it will be improved".
...its also possible i'm a Yeti from mars!
Just be straight about it and stop bullshitting around : it wont change any time soon ... (which is okay.)

[for dummies - don't care about the amount of RNG, just the way the answer is presented]

I'm really sick of half baked Dev answers which try to please everyone and dont please anyone in the process... just to dodge bullets and hold open doors. (at times for years)
"we never said that"... ye ... "you never said anything of use" would be more true then.
It just causes frustrating arguments between players.

I would prefer if some one like SS takes those questions on, cause i don't like theoretical talks about such serious problems.
He is part of the system and i want 1# hand sources and not: ""i guess it might could be possible that if"" talk.

Blogsite: 4100 signs max? Thanks for the warning? (< none at all)

    Thanks.

    2. I can only second everything you said. These are relevant questions and address many problems WoT has now and makes more and more players annyoed. AW should look into these issues and come up with a solution or will be a simple clone instead of real competitor, which would be sad.
I hope for the best, for now, there is promise. But promises we had plenty already.

      Delete
    3. Uh.... that was long

      - bots and hacks - we'll have to see what the botters come up with and react. We do however obviously have some ideas, so it should be fine
      - no XVM
      - no player skins (those count as mods)
      - I am sure there will be an anti-AFK system in place, but we are currently still in alpha, these things will get added in time

      - there will be hightier premiums right off the bat, we have to sell SOMETHING now that we do not have P2W gold ammo. On the other hand, our MM will ensure your team is not full of 43 percent players and the other of 60 percent players
      - as you can imagine from my previous actions, racists and idiots in chat is something I do not like. There will be no national segregation - but they will be punished. Very harshly.
      - nicknames will be judged using common sense and legality in the countries that play on that respective server
      - spamming and failplatoons are not allowed (for first, there will be a filter, second is not allowed by MM)
      - detailed tutorials will be implemented, no worries

I can sense you are a bit angry, mate :) I can however say what I want and it won't change your mind. It is better that you come and see.

      Delete
    4. Communication:
Can i at least create a room which i "own"... (as admin, create pw, set join message etc)
so my friends auto-join on game entry? eve online has that great feature...
so i had a hub for all my friends to meet and even could make some "mod".
"blinking" on/off ... font sizes... etc...

Also for private conversations you could set an $ amount which the other had to pay towards npcs before the chat request was send = so it cost what ever amount you say is your time worth... reduces "noob(ish)" spammers, without locking out everyone.

      Wot for comparison:
private conversations lock up after 10mins and i have to reopen conversations (so much about that). you cant invite ppl into open conversations or rooms ...

      Fairplay:
You showed me the warpack stream your self- so you know that "fairplay part" which i wont explain for that reason, but simple put: Its a trust breaker... :/

Communication and fair play should be Nr.1 priority in MMo_Team_Shootern shouldn't it?

Thats whats im angry about. Such a shame. Ruins a otherwise good game...
so i dont want to see that a second time ofc... the other stuff - is secondary to me tbh.

I will give AW a try, since some of the things you said sound right for now.
Also i have a certain degree of trust to you and try to be "open for new stuff" anyway.

Ofc if there is ultra spam and bots flying around well...

  27. I would not play AW due to my lack of interest in modern vehicles, but I wish all the luck for AW. A good competition would bring good things for everyone in the community.

Also, haters and extreme defenders should learn to control themselves. This goes both ways.

  29. What about platoon sizes? 3 or 4 players?

    1. 2 or 3 players, any larger platoons would imbalance the battles

  30. By your info, it seems Obsidian is planning to add a lot of variety of vehicles. So how does the crew setup work exactly, SS? Will every tank have a specific separate crew from their origin nation or would it be according to the type of vehicle that the crew is trained for? For example would a crew trained in artillery warfare be able to man any type of artillery vehicle from any nation? Also are there perk like systems planned to enhance crew efficiency or is Obsidian taking a different take on that?

    1. Crew system was recently significantly overhauled but no, it will not be based on nationality on the vehicle. There will be a special commander with RPG-style perk tree but other crewmembers will be simplified (something like in WoT). All will have their names, portraits and the commanders will have BIO.

    2. Check Jingles videos on YT, he covered that topic. In short - crew(without commander) is tied to the tank, commander is tied to weapons diller tree.

    3. What Jingles showed is no longer actual.

    4. Whoah, it changed that much? Damn, sorry for misleading info then.

  31. SS: will different shells have different effects and damage models?
exempla gratia: HESH going squish and having more of an effect on sloped armor, APCR having high pen low damage, etc.

    1. Yes. A video describing some of the differences will come soon.

  33. Last night's Announcement by SilentStalker on the AW Forums, (not in the Alpha forums so I am not breaking NDA) "The Road Ahead" http://aw.my.com/en/forum/showthread.php?6818-Armored-Warfare-the-Road-Ahead
Of particular note is the one statement he makes, "....a limited number of alpha test rounds will follow in April." So, there is an answer to the most important ?, WHEN CAN US THAT ARE ALPHA TESTERS PLAY AGAIN? BTW Rita, this is CavSgtHood

  34. Will Armored Warfare feature a replay system? For recording reasons you know.

  35. How will the self guided weapons work? I'm concerned that they will be a "Fire missle to win!" type weapon, while tanks with cannons need skill to aim, lead, compensate for distance, etc. Other games had boring armored warfare, because people just clicked a missle at you and the game did the rest.
